An Attractive Gospel
“Let mercy and truth never leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart, and so find favor and high esteem in the sight of God and man.” Proverbs 3:3-4
“Adorn the doctrine of God our Savior in all things.” Titus 2:10 NKJV
“So that in every way, they make the teachings about God our Savior attractive.” Titus 2:10 NIV
Titus 2:10 is an admonishment to make the Gospel attractive. The word “adorn” here, is the Greek word “ko’smeo” and it means “to put in proper order, that is, decorate. —adorn, garnish, trim.
What an amazing concept that mere humans could “decorate” or “adorn” the Gospel of Christ. Even more astonishing is to whom this admonition was given. It was given to servants. (Titus 2:9) One would think this important task would be assigned to an apostle, theologian, pastor or prince but it was given to servants and verse nine instructs these servants to make the Gospel attractive by the way they live out their daily lives, doing the mundane.
This principle has importance for every child of God. Why are we doing what we are doing? If we are performing the task at hand whether it is to broker a deal, mend a fence, mop a floor, file a report, or change a diaper for the one thousandth time, simply for the sake of the task, we are unlikely to find it fulfilling for very long. If we are doing it for Heavenly purposes, however, all is changed.
Personally, I can put up with a lot out of love for such a wonderful Savior and Friend.
How do we stay focused on the eternal in the midst of the chaotic temporal? We must devote time to God alone. We must commune with the Lover of Our Souls.
In His presence is fullness of joy (Ps. 16:11). It is that sweet pleasure which makes the mundane, frustrating and even sorrowful not only tolerable but a joyful sacrifice of praise.
Prayer
“My God, this world is a loud and chaotic place and sometimes I feel like a gerbil spinning on a wheel. Lift my eyes to you today and set my heart on things above. Pour out your Spirit on me and spread your table before me. May all I do and say be a sacrifice of praise to you.”
~Amen~
